Robert Mayplethorpe studio

This photograph that I captured was a photograph that was inspired by Robert Mayplethorpe. My ideas that came to mind when taking this photograph was that I wanted to just use one body feature which in this photograph I came to the conclusion was a arm and hand. When I was taking this photograph I was exploring photographs using bubbles. This was just experimenting but when I came to look at the photographs they came out very well. Through the editing process of this photographs I decided to convert the whole background to black and white and keep the bubble in colour. This was because inside the bubble was a photograph that I cropped and down sized to fit. This photograph is of hands strapped together. I placed this in the bubble to show that there is no escape which is the meaning behind my photograph. If I would go back and improve this photograph I would of taken the photograph closer to see more detail into the bubble.



This photograph is of Demi Wrenn and I positioned her to show pain in her face and to show herself pulling away from the strings that are strapped round her hands. This photograph was also inspired by Robert Mayplethorpe and was shown to show trying to escape like the photograph above. The editing I decided to convert to black and white this was because I felt it would be more affective to show the negative situation. The black and white also made it show the lightness and darkness within the photograph. If I would go back and improve this photograph I would change the editing to a dim colour instead of straight black and white.


Overall I feel that this shoot went very well. This shoot was in the studio and was an extended shoot for  Robert Mayplethorpe to get some more photographs. I found that the first studio shoot I did that was inspired by Robert Mayplethorpe didnt go as well as I thought it would. Therefore the second time I did it I felt that it was a better improvement and contained better ideas to experiment and edit with.

This photograph was one of my 4 straight prints from the Robert mayplethorpe location inspired work. This photograph is of Beth holding a camera. When I first took this I had a basic idea but didn't know why it would link to Robert Mayplethorpe's work. However the more I look at it the editing with the black and white background makes it inspired as well as the meaning of Robert capturing a moment of life and how it will never be captured again only remembered as a memory. I like how this photograph as a rock edge to it and that it doesn't look simple. However to improve this photograph I could of captured her face to show seriousness.

                                                    This photograph was also inspired by Robert Mayplethorpe and was taken to symbolise the cross and show religion. This photograph was taken at an angle to get a different view instead of taken central. I really like how the black and white creates the background to be dark with no shadow. To improve this photograph I could of taken the photograph closer to get more detail from the cross.




This shoot was successful in my eyes however I feel that this was not one of my strongest shoots out of all the shoots I have done. I feel that taking photographs that were inspired by Robert Mayplethorpe was difficult as we was taking them outside and his work is based in a studio. However I feel that I took some decent photographs and the outcome was really good. If I would go back and add to this shoot I would defiantly take more photograph to experiment with.

Overall Evaluation

At the beginnning of the formal elements project we was instructed to write a list of the 10 formal elements these were lines,colour,movement,pattern,shape,depth,reflection,form,tone and texture. These were the individial elements that we would have to research and explore to then be developed into photographs that we have been inspired to take or created ourselves with our own imaginiation. After the formal elements list we then had to write a list of the visual world this was to gather our understanding of where the formal elements are categorised under. This was to make sure that when we go out capturing photographs we knew where the formal elements would be. The visual elements list was very long this is because the visual world is full of the 10 formal elements and this is what makes up our world today. I feel that if we hadnt had the discussion of the visual world in class and written the list I wouldnt of had a great understanding as I did. Because this meant that I would be more confident at crafting photographs and knowing what exactly to take when  I went on my shoots or in the studio.
For every formal element we had to do a image bank this was very important in my eyes because the lay out of this was 6 related photographs to each formal element which we anaylsed in a paragraph for each. This allowed myself and other photography students to explore photographs that were inspirational to us. This would then make it easier for me to take photographs myslef and edit them knowing I have a inspired photograph that lead me to take what I did and create my own meaning behind it. In class we also had to do a definition page and this required a dictionary definiton, list of what comes under the formal element, 4 anyalysed photographs and lastly my own definition. This was very helpful as I could see what the definition of each formal element was this helped me to understand my photographs better and to create my own definiton.
However even though these above were all very helpful and contributed to my understanding the task that made things clear to me was the mind map this was because I had to put examples underneath eachother formal element. This was something that made it clear to me what I was going to be taking photographs of for each formal element. This also simply layed out and was something visually clear to read quickly which would recap the ideas and examples I had written for each shoot.
After all this research and written work I then went out and took photographs which I could imagine in my mind would fit the formal element best and show clearly what one it was. As well as showing off my skills and having a captivating outcome. After each shoot we then had to print out contact sheets and pick our top four which was then agreed by paul and some in some cases were changed. Following this was the editing process which was only applyed to the four chosen. This was repeated for each formal element. This process was very long and some formal elements were tougher then others.
The formal elements I struggled with were reflection, tone and movement. Reflection I found difficult because I knew where to take the photographs. This was because a class discussion was made and the main places to take reflection photographs were mirrors, puddles and glass windows. However I struggled with what angle to take the photograph and how to just fit in the reflection with no other distractions in the photograph. This is why I didnt take a lot of photographs. However the ones I did were focused on more and as a result turned out well.
I also struggled with tone this was because I found it difficult to imagine the photographs I was taken to be black and white and where the different tones would be in the photographs. I ended up trying not to over think and take photographs and then see how they ended up in the editing process. This formal element I feel contained some of my stronger photographs
Lastly the formal element movement was the formal element I struggled with the most this was because I found it hard to capture photographs that looked very obviouse what they were but in a blurring motion. I feel that my photographs for burring could of been a lot better but they were presented and edited well in my eyes.
My strongest formal elements in my opinion were texture and form this was because on both of these shoots the sun was shining this allowed me to get shadows and the 3D appearence in form and to show the texture of the photograph I took very clear and detailed. These both I found fun and I felt my ideas were more developed in these two.
In addition surprisingly my tone photographs looked one of my strongest element even though I struggled with the shoot. This is evidence that with the research that I did was very helpful with making my photographs the best that they could be.
After every shoot we had to do a work diary this was to look back at what we took and if we would go back to the shoot what would be add to them. Most of my shoots were to take more photographs or to take more of a variety of photographs. However I didnt think I lacked photographs but more would of given me more of a choice for my 4 straight prints.
I think that the best part of this project was the studio work and the print techniques. This was because the studio was something I hadnt done before which made it exciting. Once I had leanrt how to use the lighting for effect and the camera I found it very easy to produce professional photographs that would stand out in my portfolio. The best studio shoot I feel I done was my second shoot of form which was a massive improvment from my first studio form shoot. As the lighting was much lighter and the photographs were more creative.
I also liked the print techniques as I was learning new techniques that I could apply with my own photographs. The soft focus was something that I liked the outcome of as it made my photograph look effortless and beautiful. However the print technique I enjoyed the most was photojoiner this was because I understood how to do this one very well and the outcome of my photograph in my eyes looked very challenging. I think this is one of my faveroite photographs from the project.
During the project we had to do a research log which was of 20 photographers and 5 of our best photographers which we anaylsed in detail. These both contributed to my understanding and opened my eyes to the photography indsutry.
Lastly as our class worked at a good pace we had time to do some extended work this was. Two nature walks, the theme of contrast and inspired work from Robert Mapple thorpe.
I loved the nature walks as this gave me other destinations to take photographs and was the time where I think my photographs began to improve hugely. In the project we had enterd a compettion where we used some of our nature photographs. These photographs had deep meanings behind them and were shown to other memebers of the gibert galleries. This was good in my eyes as it gave us an idea of what people out of the college thought of our work.
Robert Mapple thorpe was the last photographer and thing we did in this project. To get an idea of what photographs to take we watched a long clip about his carreer and about him as person which was a reason for some of his work.
My view on his work was that the simplistic nature and how her brings confidence to his models was very inspiring and how he used black and white for every photograph. When I captured photographs inspired by him the ones I liked the most were taken in the studio. This was because Roberts photographs were based in a studio. Also the back drops and lighting made my photographs similar to his.
Overall I have learnt many things in this formal elements project what each formal element is and my understanding of them is correct. I have also learnt the smallest of things like how to use photoshop and edit my photographs. To applying print techniques to my pictures and taking photographs in the studio by using the lighting. This project has allowed me to see photography in a different way instead of just looking at photographs I can interperate the deep meaning behind them. I also feel that I have more confidence taking photographs in both the studio and outside locations. My knowledge has hugely increased and this project has been very enjoyable to do. Even though there was a lot of written work to complete and there was times where this project was very stressful. My final outcomes from my top twenty powerpoint has shown that hard work pays off.

Connecting Essay 5

My photograph is of a bubble that is still attached to its holder and the arm of Beth holding it. Inside the bubble is the photograph that I took of Demi's hands hand cuffed together. I have lowerd the opacity so that the photograph is very suttle inside the bubble. This photograph I like because of the meaning this is that the bubble is trapping and symbolising Demi's isolation in the hand cuffs. This photograph represents how you can feel trapped in society with no escape or freedom. I expecially like how the photograph is black and white but the bubble and its holder isnt. This makes the bubble stand out from the photograph and attract the viewer more. I also like how the photograph is very simple looking but has a huge meaning because without the meaning behind the photograph I feel the photo wouldnt be as powerful. To improve this photograph I would of taken the photograph closer so that the bubble is much bigger and clearer to see. However overall this photograph I feel I have edited and composed very well.


This photograph is photographed by Jerry Uelsman. The photograph is of hands spread open and a photograph of a empty boat coming from the shore. I like that this photograph is black and white and how it adds to the emptiness to the photograph. This photograph is taken close up which I like as well because then you can see the detail very clear and it also feels the page up more. This photograph I can interperate its meaning as that the boat is very lonely and is being overpowerd by the huge ocean as well as the hands showing its isolation. The lighting of this photograph is very light which sets a calming tone to it. The black background creates the main focus of the hands stand out very well. Overall I really like this photograph and its imagination and creativity looks very good from the outcome.

These photographs both connect as they both are black and white and  both use the theme of isolation and wanting to escape. The meanings of both of these photographs are very deep and the suttle lighting reflects this and creates the photographs to be calming even though both photographs have a negative meaning. Both of these photographs contain the body part of hands but are shown from a different postion and angle. Even though these photographs dont look identical they both have similar meanings and affects.

Connecting Essay 4

My photograph is of flowers that are all growing in front of a building. The side of the building is bright yellow and the flowers have a hint of yellow in them which makes them match. The flowers are spread across the wall and are differnt levels which is why I took this photograph as I could imagine what it would look like when I came to edit it. I exspecially like the bright colours and how it expresses a summers day which makes my photograph very postive. I also like the theme of nature and how by capturing this creates the photograph to look very beautiful. I also like how the ratio of background to flower is that there is more colours then flower. This makes the photograph look not overly clutterd which is why it looks very eye catching. I also like how the flowers are rising from the bottom of the building this symbolises how the flowers represent people and how when genral people could be feeling low they must not doubt themsleves as postive things will come and make them rise to the top. To improve this photograph I could of taken the photograph closer to get more detail of the flowers. But overall I like this picture and how it has turned out.

This photograph is of flowers that have been taken so they are growing upwards to the sky as the sky is the background. I like the anlge that this photograph is taken as its very different and shows a different perspective of the flowers. I also like the bright colours and how the sun is shining in the sky to make it contain different shades of blue. I also like how there is a lot of flowers that all cover the photograph but the centre is left empty this could show how the centre could be the main goal and the flowers represent the amount of people who share the same goal for example a certain job. This photograph reflects a summers day and the bright colours are very warming and make me as a viewer feel very postive and happy.

These two photographs connect this is through both of them using flowers in there photographs. But mainly because of the colours they both use very strong bright colours that make there pictures very capitivating. The use of colours in both photographs also represent a summers day and how the brightness of the photographs bring happiness to the viewer. There composition is very different however there lay outs are both very creative and arent boring they are something that someone could see as very interesting.

Connecting Essay 3

My photograph is of Demi and is taken in the studio. This photograph was taken with a black back drop this was created by using two white blocks to block the shadows so that the background was completly one shade of black. My aim in this photograph was to use Demi as she was wearing a dark coloured jumper which would not show against the black background. Therefore my outcome was showing Demi's face and as if it was the only thing in the photograph. I like the way the photograph came out as it looks very different then a full body or shoulder to head portrait. I have decided not to take the colours out of the photograph but not to have her face to bright as it will distract and not fit the look of it being ghostly. By just having Demi's head in the photograph makes the photograph look very simple and this is what makes it look eye catching in my view. I also instructed Demi to keep a serious face this was to take the emotion out of the photograph and allow the viewer to interperate what they think of her personality by the way she looks. To improve this photograph I could of experimented with using a prop that looked like it was floating where her arm would blend in with the background. Or I could of put suttle tones of colours in her face to change the emotion.

This photograph is taken by the photographer Robert Mapple thorpe. He was exspecially known for his portraits and this is one of them. I like the way this women blends in with the black background and it only shows her face as the main  focus as its lighter then her body. I also like the way her face is very white and her face has a serious expression to it which creates this photograph to look very haunting but capitivating at the same time. This photograph shows the contrast of light and dark and is very simplistic which creates this photograph to have no distractions which will make the viewer just focus on the women. Overall I think that this photograph has been very well presented and layed out and is somethin that I have inspired by.



Both of these photograph connect through there style as my photograph and Robert Mapple thorpe's photograph both use the black background and portrait that looks like the face is just in the photograph. The format is the same as they both are in the centre and there expresson are both very serious. In addition they both also use a light and dark tone however my photograph has colours where as Robert Mapple thorpe's photograph is black and white. Overall I am happy that mine links to this as it was the photograph that inspired me with mine.

Connectin Essay 2

My photograph that I took is of the sky and is presented in a grid. I exspecially like the colours and tones in this photograph because the colours vary from bright to very dark this shows the tones in the sky as the clouds could be shadowing the light in some but revealing the light in others. This photograph shows how big the sky is and the metaphor of the sky could be illustrating how big society is. In this photograph I chose the lay out to be the four similar photographs to not be postioned on the corners or centre and the centre and corner photographs to be the different looking ones. I chose this lay out to make the photograph look presentable and make sense instead of it being in a random order. To improve this photograph I could of changed the adjustments of the levels and curves to make the photographs look more natural as the photographs look more like the sea then the sky.


This photograph is using the grid technique and is of someone diving into the ocean. In this photograph I like the tones of light and dark and how they are in contrast with eachother. As the splash from the dive is very light and the ocean water itself is very dark. The colours in this photograph are very bright and create this photograph to stand out. I also like how each individual photograph isnt the same which shows an adventure that this diver went on. Furthermore this photograph is presented very well and looks very professional as the grid has 16 sqaures which must of been difficult to create. Overall I think that this photograph is very eye catching and unique as I havnt seen this before.

These photographs both connect because they both use the grid method to present the photographs. They both also use light and dark tones in each individual photograph. As well as each photographs being different to eachother. Even though my photograph has less squares they both used the same technique. Lastly they both use a similar theme of the natural world as the sea and sky are not man made and both include the same colour of different shades of blues.

Connecting Essay 1

This photograph that I took is of the college libary. In this photograph I exspecially like how the individual photographs form one huge photograph. Even though this photograph doesnt look in the correct order that it is seen by the eye this is what makes it eye catching.There is a lot of colours in this photograph and by adjusting the levels and curves I have brought out the brightness and colours very well. In addition the technique I have used in this photograph is photojoiner this is inspired by the photographer David Hockney. The format of this photograph is in landscape and by having it spread across the page creates it to stand out and look different from other similar styled photographs. Another thing I like about this photograph is that the individual photo's are not in line with eachother this is what makes the photograph interesting to look at. By myself looking back at this photograph I can see that by making all the individual photographs the same size makes it very neat and presentable. However to improve this photograph I think that I could of made the photograph look more 3D as I have attmepted to experiment with the photograph and make it look rounder by the sides. Unfortantly this hasnt worked out so by myself taking the photographs and taking more on the sides of the libary would of achieved this affect better. Overall I feel that this photograph was very well taken and created using adobe photoshop.


This photograph is taken by David Hockney and is using the technique of photojoiner. This photograph is of a street in a town as the photograph is very clever at drawing the eyes in the centre of the photograph and leading them through the street. The main focus of this photograph I feel is the tree's this could be because nature is a beautiful thing to capture. The colours in this photographs are very suttle and natural and all complement eachother very well. This photograph is photojoiner as David Hockney as taken a certain scenary and taken loads of indivdual photographs that can all come together to make one photo. I like the way the seperate pictures overlap eachother and this is what makes the photograph captivating.

The connection between these photographs are that they both use the same technique of photojoiner as they both contain individual photographs that form a large photograph which is overlapping and disorderd. They both also are presented landscape and have a 3D affect to them which makes them both stand out. The colours that they both contain arent extremely bright and fit there themes very well. This is because my one is of a libary which is very warm and welcoming to students and David Hockneys photograph uses nature so the colours are very natural. Overall Im very happy that my photograph connects to David Hockneys because this is who inpsired me when I was taking mine.

Robert Maypole Thorpe Notes

Robert Mapple thorpe

 

Robert Mapple thorpe was born in a suburd of New York in 946. He was bought up as a catholic. When he was sixteen years old he went to the pratt insitute (art college) this is when he discoverd photography and his friend Batti Smith. Robert Mapple thorpe was America's most contraversual photographer. This is through his well known portraits, flower photographs and his sexually explicet photographs of Man Haten's gay community. Robert Mapple thorpe's sexuality was gay and unfortanly died of aids in 1989.

 

His portraits were of the rich and famouse and this extremly changed the look of fashion photography. However his protraits showed the contrast of high fashion to drug life.In his work it involved sex,violence and race this caused him to be excused of being a pawnographer.

Robert Mapple thorpe's work was his attempt to express himself as in them days it was wrong to be a gay catholic. His mum knew but his dad didnt which was because he feared telling him.

 

He worked extensivly with portraits and expecially with black men who he thought of as sex objects. This was thought of as being racist. However his work was known to be very influential and powerful. Robert Mapple thorpe was a very commited man and was an artist who wanted to make money. He would go up to famouse people and simply say to them can I take a portrait of you. They would say yes as he was doing it for free. The outcome of his photographs amazed and stunned people because he believed that by capturing a photograph that was showing a moment was important as that moment could never be recreated to the detail and its way. He would then charge them a lot of money for the prints. This is how he moved forward in the industry. In my opion this is very intelliegent thing to do.

 

Robert Mapple thorpe moved away from his home town. He said it was a safe enviroment and a good place to come from and leave. This was because he want wanted to adventure out to somewhere more exciting as his home town was very calm.

 

He then lived with his best friend Patti Smith.She said that he was an extremly postive man and alsways brought confidence to his work. He began photographing Patti and these were the first sexuality ones. They were used for practise and were a success. He then established his talent and included the contrast of good and evil in his work. As well as working with the idea of opposites.

 

Robert went to church every sunday and was bought up in the church enviroment. His work reflects this enviroment through the simplicity, perfect balance and no disharmoney as his work wasnt clutterd but very stylish. Robert Mapple thorpe had a charm to his modles and always made friends with them.

 

The way Robert worked was that at the beginning of the shoot he would give his models time to relax and be them selves. This would then boost there confidence and he would never tell them there doing something wrong but be very precise with his directions to not cause them to stiffen up and look awful. His work was mainly black and white and was studio based. Roberts photographs were always the same light with a toned background. His patients were incredible and his shoots were always silent and calm this allowed him to focus and keep a nice atmosphere with him and his modle. He symphasies with anyone as he was a very nice person. Robert's work expresses emotions and his work was so stunning that he would capture the whole persons personality in just one shot.

 

Robert Mapple thorpe captured the life he lived but also the times America was living in. Eventually though Robert needed money as he was broke. This then stimulated the photography he captured of flowers. This was simply because he needed money and flowers were very popular and easy to make money from. At this point in his career he had a team of people working with him. Where a stylist would pick a flower, Robert would then beautifully photograph it and then a printer would print it. Robert captured a perfect structured flower which had a edge to it that had the meaning of not being sweet but a New York flower. This was shown through how the shadow fell.

 

Community was becoming less sexual however Robert was showing his work by his own feelings and ways. Robert Mapply thorpe captured a point in American society which has changed and is over now.

 

My opinion on Robert Mapple thorpe is that I admire his work and how he didnt worry about what anyone thought. His work reflected his view of soicety and even though he had trouble being ecused of being a pawnographer and being racist. He still carried on doing something that he loved and truley expressed himself. His simplicity and manner in the studio I loved and how his confidence helped him move forwward in his career but also helped other people become more confident in themseves through this portraits of them. His work has inspired me in my own photography that is part of my extension work. However his sexual theme isnt something I would capture and I do feel that his work that involved sexual objects is very strainge but this was something that made him well known and never forgotten through some peoples eyes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Work Diary Studio Free

In this studio shoot the theme was free this meant that we could experiement with different ideas. I was in the group with Demi and Beth. As a group we decided we wanted the black back drop as our first set of photographs. This meant that we had to put the white rectangle blocks and place them infront of the lights. This allowed the background to be completely black and not a dark grey shade. From this set up I had learnt how to set up for a black background and do the flash readings for the camera.

The first photograph Im going to evaluate is the photograph of demi. This photograph looks like Demi's head is floating this is because she is wearing a dark jumper which camoflaged with the background and her hair and face is light which was seen as it is contrast with the black background.This photograph was taken very seriouse and I have experimented in the editing process to see what the photograph would look like in a darker hue and saturation where the colours is very vague. This photograph is very similar to the photograph Robert Maypole Thorpe. I had taken this without realising however when I look back at it and can see a meaning behind it that society is so big that sometimes you can lose yourself.

The second photograph I took in this free studio shoot was on a white background. This photograph was a photograph of half of Demi's face. The aim of uisng a white background was to show the virsutility of my photographers of using a black and white background. This photograph shows the contrast of demis face and the white background. I feel that this photograph is simple but different. To improve this photograph I could of taken the photograph which captured her eye more and made it stand out.

If I would go back and add to this shoot I would of taken more photographs on the white background.

Studio Work diary, Form

This shoot was taken in the studio. The theme of the shoot was to take photographs of form using people. This was to be presented showing the shadows of lightness and darkness in the body. This was to show that human bodys are 3D and have shape to them which will be hilighted in the photographs. This was the 2nd time I was in the studio so from the mistakes I made in the first studio shoot I was then learning from them and aiming to improver my photographs.The lighting was set up so that one was dimmer then the other to show shadow and create silhouettes from the body.

The first photograph I am going to evaluate is the side view of Addy. This photograph used the prop of a flower which I placed in her fringe this was to symbolise how nature is beautiful and so are females. The photograph showed form through the silhouette of her face which identified the shape of her nose and mouth and how they are three diemensonal not flat. Form also was shown in her shoulder and top of her arm. This was shown through the shadow of the lightness and darkness which also showed that her arm wasnt flat but 3D. This photograph is one of my favorites and I feel is presented well. To improve this photograph I could of got less shadow in the background to show the white background
d more and edited the flower to make it brighter to stand out more.

The second photograph Im going to evaluate is the photograph of both Addy and Demi. This photograph showed form in there arms,faces, hair and clothes. The lightness and shadows in these areas establish that they have shape to there body and are three dimensioal. This photograph also I feel expresses happiness and friendship through there cheerful smiles and the way they are standing close to hilight closeness. To improve this photograph I could of used my time better to experiment with different levels.

If I would go back and add more to this shoot I would defiently experiement more with both Addy and Demi in the photograph and postioned them in different place, levels and angles.

Contrast 2 work diary

The second time I went out to shoot contrast. I found it much easier because we had a discussion with Paul before we went out to take photographs. This allowed me to gather my ideas before I went out to take photographs. The difference between the two contrast shoots was that this one involved contrast in emotion and personality and appearence. Where as my first contrast shoot was on nature and man made materials.

The first photograph im going to evaluate is the photograph where I used the contrast of Beth expressing a happy and angry emotion. I did this by putting the red back ground with her angry expression. And the happy expression with a white background these reflected the emotions very well. To improve this photograph I could of taken the photographs closer and been more creative in the editing process.

The second photograph im going to evaluate is the photograph of the hair. I used Sophie and Taylors hair in contrast with eachother as one was curly and one was straight. Then i changed the opacity to put Demi and Beth's hair ontop but ghostly to show Blonde and Black hair. This photograph was creative and fit the theme of contrast very well. To improve this photograph I could of cropped there bodies and just had there heads and hair.

If I would go back and add to this shoot I would of taken more photographs as I only filled one and bit contact sheets. However by not taking as much photographs showed that I concentrated more on what I was taking and how they would turn out instead of making sure that I have taken plenty of photographs.

Contrast 1 work diary

In my first contrast shoot we established in the lesson that contrast was opposites of eachother. For example light and dark or rough and smooth. This gave me a bit of an idea of what to capture but didnt create a huge understanding. When I went out to take my photographs the weather was dry and the sun was shining which was great because then my photographs would bring out the detail more of the established contrast as the sun would be shining on them. This allowed me to take some decent photographs which was good.

The first photograph Im going to evaluate is my photograph showing half brick and half wood. This photograph is taken vertically where the two man made materials meet. This photograph shows the contrast of two differnt building materials. The brick being very light and rough and the wood being very dark and smooth. The sun was directly shining on this photograph which bought out both the textures and hilighted the detail more to show the contrast of them.This photograph to me is very simple but the brightness of it and the layout makes it appealing to look at. Before I started photography at a level I didnt think that you could take a photograph of man made materials and make it look engaging. This is something I have learnt from all my shoots in formal elements. To improve this photographs both sides could of been even to make the photograph more presentable.

The second photograph Im going to evaluate is the photograph I took of the pavement where the shadow was covering half of the photograph diagonlly and the other half was very bright. This photograph shows the contrast of lightness and darkness. When I was taking this photograph I imagined the meaning behind it. This is that in life there is always going to be dark and lonly times but if you keep smiling your life will soon brighten up and become postive. This photograph is presented well. However to improve this photograph I could of taken it closer to achieve more detail in the photograph.

If I would go back and add more to this contrast shoot I would take more photographs of colour and the emotions that colour expresses.

Studio work diary leaves

When I went into the studio for my 4th time to take photographs. The theme was to take photographs that fit the theme of quite reflection as well as leave photographs. Because it was my 4th time in the studio I found it much easier to use the lighting and work with the shadows. There was lots of props to use which brang out everyones creative sides.I also found it easier to work the camera because I had used it in the past times I have been in the studio.

My first photograph im going to evaluate is the photograph of Demi with the leave against her face. This photograph involves a leaf which fits the theme of nature. Aswell as quite reflection as its been taken because of the life cycle of a leaf. As well as the beauty of both nature and Demi. This photograph used the dark red back drop which created the photographs to have autmn colours in them. This back drop was very different to plain white and gave it  different style to it. To improve this photograph the leaf could of been more attached to Demi and the photograph could of used shadows.

The second photograph is of the mixture of leaves. This photograph was close up so brang out the details in all the leaves. As well as the colours and the fresh water was hilighted. The photograph again was inspired by the cycle of a leaf which fit the theme of quite reflection. To improve this photograph the organisation of the leaves could of been better and the foucus and quality better.

If I would go back and add to the studio shoot. I would of taken more photographs and more photographs of leaves which were better and higher quality.

Nature walk 2 work diary

When I went out on my second nature walk with my photography class. We decided to go a different route and this was so that we get totally different photographs from our last walk. Because I had been out and taken photographs from my my last walk this time I had more of an idea what to take and how to take them. The weather on this walk was much colder and it had rained the night before thereofore there was alot of puddles. Even though the weather wasnt very nice this allowed me to take reflection photographs in the puddles and show how autumn was fading out and how winter was coming and how it affects nature. I took a lot of photographs again on this walk. My two faveroite photographs were:

The first photograph was my bird photograph which appears in my top twenty and portfolio. This photograph was of the birds flying in motion. This was very affective because it looked as if the birds were flying towards the reciever. This photograph involved the sky and the clouds which created the photograph to look very beautiful. The birds were silouhetts and so was the top of the house and tree's. This made them stand out as well as using the formal element of shape. This is one of my favrouite photographs I have taken. How ever if I could improve this photograph I could of made the photograph brighter and cropped the photograph to show less birds.

The second photograph im going to evaluate is my tree photographer. This has been captured when the sun was shining right on it. This makes the tree and its remaining leaves glow. This photograph shows the life cycle of a tree through how the leaves are all almost fallen off the tree. This hilights that this photograph was taken in the autumn season. I expecially like the colours in this photograph and how the deep blue sky is in the background. The layout of how the tree covers the whole photograph and the branches spiral out are very capitivating. How ever to improve this photograph I could of made the two sides even and taken more of the tree therefore not having it as close up as it is.

If I would go back and add to this shoot I would take more photographs using the formal element of reflection. Also I would take more photograph reflecting the cold weather.

Nature walk 1 work diary

Work Diary

When I went on the nature walk with my photography class the walk was for atleast 30 minutes. This allowed us to take loads of photographs so that we had a nice amount of photographs to select and edit to fit in to our portfolio and the compettion. The weather was dry and perfect to get some lovely photographs. This shoot we explored other surroundings instead of just the college. We went out to woods and mainly places where nature was. I managed to take a lot of photographs and learnt new techniques while on the walk. I also learnt how to make a simple thing like the sky look stunning

My leaves photograph that is in my portfolio and my top twenty. This photograph I expecially like because of the bright colours and the layout of the photographs. As well as the photograph being close up which makes detailes of the leaves stand out. Even though this photograph is under the nature walk. This photograph shows extremly well the formal element of lines. This is shown in the leaves. Overall I think that these colours create nature to be beautiful. To improve this photograph I could of blurred the background out more to just have the attention on the big leaves.

My second photograph is the photograph I took of the huge bushes that uses a variety of colours. These colours represent autumn very well as they are green,yellow and red's. This creates the photograph to look very unique and stand out from just plain green nature. The colours are all seperate from eachother and the gaps in the bushes which are dark create the formal element of depth. The layout of ths photograph is that the bushes cover the whole page. This photograph is very busy and shows natures beauty. To improve this photograph I could of enhanced the brightness and focused on a closer version of this photograph.

If I would go back and add to my nature walk I would take more photographs of flowers as my work mainly consisted of tree's and leaves.

Form Work Diary

The first photograph I'm going to evaluate is the photograph of a building. This photograph has a very good angle and has been taken to show half of the building which makes this photograph look interesting. The photograph shows form very clear and is very noticeable to the viewer. The lighting is very good and was taken at the right time when the sun was shining. To improve this photograph I could of made the photograph closer to make form more obvious.

The second photograph I'm going to evaluate is the photograph of the path way and banister. This photograph shows form very well and the angle of the photograph shows depth as well which makes this photograph very captivating. The sharpness ad quality of the photograph is very clear. However to improve this photograph I would of taken the photograph lower to be at its level.

When I went out shooting the weather was lovely and bright and made it easier for me to take photographs of form. To improve and add to the shoot I would take more photographs on nature and plants.

Texture Work Diary

The first photograph I'm going to evaluate is the photograph of a green plant bush. This photograph was taken very close up to show the texture clearly and how detailed the texture is. As well as the texture to be identified to the viewer. Also the colours of this photograph are very bright and eye catching which creates the photograph to be at a high quality. The light in this photograph makes the texture stand out even more and creates nature to look beautiful. To improve this photograph I would of taken it extremely close up to show texture even more and focus on one part of the bush.

The second photograph I'm going to evaluate is

the extreme close up of the tree and its texture. This photograph has a light and dark side to it the light side really enhances the texture and I can see straight away that it has a rough and edgy feel to it. The photograph focuses on the texture and has no business in the background taking your eye of the photograph. To improve this photograph I would get all the tree in the light so that the whole texture is enhanced.

When I went out shooting texture the first attempt there wasn't much light out therefore texture in my photographs wasn't seen very well. How ever then I went out the second time and there was a lot of light and all my photographs came out showing texture very well. To improve my shoot I could of taken more shots that weren't hugely close up to give a range of angles in my contact sheet.
